How to find the family on Flekkerøya!
The special about Flekkerøy-slekta is that I can find the family back several generations in a relatively small island. Moreover, several related are described in the RM Rudolfsen book "Flekkerøy in ancient and modern times" from 1947. The farm-related conditions are described in "Oddernes bygdebok. Gardshistorie" by Kåre Rudjord from 1968. And information of recent date, we find in "Norwegian settlement. Southern Section." These together with other sources that I will come back to, makes it possible to create a fairly complete picture of the population on the island. The holes, I have ambitions to clog again in my own web site about Flekkerøya.
How many on Flekkerøya are we related to?
Flekkerøya has roughly been divided between 6 farms. I have relatives in all farms. I will come back to an overview on this, but Skålevik are the dominant farm here. The closest family comes from here. And at a time we were related to all the individual farms here.

I've found that we have kin relations to 87% of those who are mentioned in the book by RM Rudolfsen.
This bears witness to a major, nearly frightening degree of intermarriage. Details about this I will come back to. For our families concerned, we have elements from Laudal and Kvinesdal, so we have thinned the blood slightly. The closest I come of intermarriage, is my great grandparent Ole Tobias Olsen Lindebø (1852-1904) who was third cousin to his wife Nikoline Mathilde Eriksdatter Skålevik (1854) through their common great-great-grandfather and my 5th. great-grandfather Ole Thorkildsen Skålevik (1703-1768). But I find 14 other kin relations between my grandparents. And even though my grandmother Trine Tønnesen Gjelmestad (1881-1964) comes from Kvinesdal, she is the eleventh cousin of her husband Karl Gustav Olsen Skålevik (1885-1971).
Who were our ancestors on Flekkerøya?
I will come back to a register of the family back to the oldest known generation. I have so far concentrated on finding out as much as possible about the nearest generations. The only person I have my own original sources, are my grandfather Karl Gustav Olsen (1885 - 1971). I have a few verbal handovers about him combined with the little I remember about him from my infancy.
For the remaining people back to my ancesters, I have to stay to what is written about them in the different sources. One thing that stands out here is that several of them have been involved in the war against England from 1807-14. So I'm going to make a separate presentation on this at a time. Otherwise the family consists of fishermen with greater or lesser farms.
Who were our ancestors from Laudal?
Was our great-great-grandfather Ole Rasmusen (1805 - 1870) from Kleiven or from Strædet farm in Laudal? I believe I have proved that he was from Strædet. Because of uncertainty about this combined with the many mistakes in the book about the farms i Laudal by Tomas Birkeland regarding our faimily, I have chosen to put on the web all known generation backwards in Laudal and Finsland. Regardless of what is appropriate in relation to our great-great-grandfather, our third grandfather Søren Rasmusen Strædet (1731 - 1792) is from the farm Strædet in Laudal. I've made an overview of the descendants from Strædet, yet with only a few branches. I've also published a list of events related to Strædet to help getting an overview of the family.
Our closest relatives in USA
In the summer of 2009 I received a nice mail from Katherine Olsen. She had found my website and recognized the house on Flekkerøy that my grandfather lived in (Myren). It turns out that she is my second cousin, daughter's daughter of Torvald Sigurd Olsen Skålevik (1893 - 1984) who emigrated to USA in 1911.
I've got three photos wich Katherine not known the origin of. I put them here in hope that others will recognize them.
